Motivational Interviewing

What is Motivational Interviewing?

MI is a person-centered approach to change that can help in any area where we feel pulled back into older ways of coping. It begins with empathetic listening and supportive conversation to explore your values and aspirations. By addressing the ambivalence and building on your strengths, MI empowers you to make confident, lasting changes. Whether you’re seeking to improve your health, advance your career, or overcome personal challenges, MI offers a personalized and effective way to turn your aspirations into reality.

Where does it come from?

Motivational Interviewing (MI) originated in the early 1980s, was developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick. It evolved into a versatile, client-centered approach for fostering change. Its foundation lies in empathetic communication and resolving ambivalence, gaining widespread recognition in various fields.

Exploring Ambivalence

First we begin by defining a problem area where your current approach does not align with your values and goals. We define the problem as the ambivalence, or multiple conflicting perspectives you hold about this area.

Shifting the Balance

We then thoroughly explore what works and what does not work you in your current approach, making no assumptions about where treatment should go.

New Ways Forward

As we learn more about the barriers that tie you to your current habits, we learn how to overcome them by finding new approaches that align with your deepest values and goals
